We got a little silly, we made some new friends, we kept some of the old, we did some sewing, learned some new skills, put on a few plays, sang some songs and ate some popsicles this year at Fiber and Fun. Thanks again to all these great girls who show us their talent and inspire us in so many ways and let us play with needle and thread and scraps and colored pencils again!

Beginning Sewing Project: The Reversible Tote

These are so much fun to plan and make because you get to pick out 2 fabrics that you love! And they are pretty easy to sew too, so you will be making them and making them and making them some more…before you know it you will have enough made to fit all your groceries and your friends groceries too!
We’ll be using this online tutorial as our guide
It is a great tutorial with wonderful pictures, so we are not going to re-invent the wheel (or the tote) on this one!

You will learn all about:
Sewing straight seams
Topstitching

You will need:
3/4 yd each of 2 coordinating lightweight cotton fabrics
Matching thread

Punch Cards: the Wave of the Future

We know you are busy people.

(We're pretty busy too.)

So we've come up with a new way to handle the sewing class schedule and we're pretty excited about it.

The answer is: punch cards.

If you are interested in taking a sewing class but can't commit to 4 weeks in a row, now you have a solution. You can buy a punch card that entitles you to 4 sessions at Felted Heart Studio and then you come when you can. If you need to miss a week, or have a sick child, no problem, you just skip that week.

Punch card classes are on Thursday nights from 6:30 - 9:00 starting April 15th. Since classes are small and two instructors will be on hand every week, we are going to be accomodating all levels during this class. So whether or not you are a beginner who needs to start at square one, or an advanced sewer who needs help with some specific projects, this schedule will suit your needs.

We also have learned over the past year that our students have different ideas about what they would like to learn and accomplish during class. So in the next weeks we will be posting project ideas here on the blog complete with a supply list so you can pick a project, purchase supplies and come to class prepared. Just use the search bar on the side of the blog to search for "projects" and you will see what the options are.

Meet Squirt!

Our wonderful and talented sewing student Maddie whipped up this critter during our afternoon sewing class this week. Mary and I love presenting a project idea and seeing what the girls come up with, the results never fail to impress!

Kids sewing class for girls aged 9 - 14 runs Thursday afternoons from 4 - 5:30 and is $135 for 4 sessions. Come on and join the fun!

Never be afraid of zippers again! Take our workshop and you will learn the 3 most common ways to insert a zipper: the centered application, the lapped and invisible. Zippers can be daunting, but if you follow our step by step instructions and the tips and tricks we teach you, you’ll be guaranteed success.

With your new found knowledge and confidence we'll zip through (pun intended) construction of a zipper pouch or two. These make great gifts and are a fabulous way to use up scraps or you can even upcycle fabric from clothing your kids have outgrown or that you just don't wear anymore.

This is a 3 hour workshop and you will need your own machine with a Zipper foot to participate.

Its a new year!!! OK, yeah I know it is the middle of February, so its been a new year for 6 weeks. Time flies doesn't it?

Way back in January, Mary and I got together to plan our classes for spring 2010 and the a month proceeded to slip away before we published our schedule. ANyways, we decided this time around it might be nice to offer some 2 week workshops since we know everyone is busy and it can be hard to commit to one month of classes. Browse through our offerings and see if anything interests you and let us know.

Here's what we came up with for Spring:

Alterations Workshop

Are you one of those body types that need to alter everything you buy, even if it is just hemming your new pants? If you are tired of paying high prices for alterations then this is the class for you! We’ll fill you in on the tools and techniques you’ll need to do basic alterations. You will learn how to hem those new jeans (yes, even those expensive ones), dress slacks, and a basic skirt. We’ll even cover how to alter a simple top or jacket. Bring the clothes you need altered; we’ll get it done in this 2 session workshop!

Sewing Advice 101

Hands on! Ok, so you are home sewing alone, you get stuck on your sewing project, your enthusiasm wanes, and you dump the dream of wearing your new tunic this spring. It is a new year! This is an open class to anyone of any level who has a project (or two!) that is giving you trouble or that you just need some help with. With a little hand holding and expert sewing advice to boost your confidence you will be on your way. Bring in your project and we’ll be there to assist you in any way necessary, from help reading the pattern to learning a whole new technique required to complete your project. Gather up your fabric, your machine, your questions and sign up today!

Zipper Workshop

Take the mystery out of the ZIPPER! Overcome your zipper phobia. Are you limited in your pattern selection because you shy away from patterns with zippers? Well, zip that fear and sign up for this class! You will learn the 3 most common ways to insert a zipper, the centered application, the lapped and invisible. Zippers can be daunting, but if you follow the step by step instructions and our tips and tricks we teach you, you’ll be guaranteed success. Required: A sewing machine with a zipper foot and some basic sewing skills. The supplies will be provided.

Tee Shirts

Everybody loves a great Tee. Tees are Hot! In this class you will learn how to create the perfect Tee shirt pattern and whip it together during class. Then you will be armed with the pattern to make your perfect Tee over and over again in any fabric or variation (and there are a million variations!) that you desire. We will cover selecting the appropriate knit fabric for the look you desire and basic sewing for knits techniques. Sewing with knits can be fun!

There Are a New Batch of Monkeys in Town (and One Rabbit)!

OMG we had so much fun making these monkeys! We had 12 sign -ups for the workshop, so we split into 2 groups and made monkeys on Thursday and Saturday night. Each group was a blast!

These little guys are popping up everywhere and they are so irresistible! Ok, go ahead and give yourself permission to have a little FUN! Embrace your inner monkey and come create one with us. It can be for yourself or someone special. Giving a handmade gift this holiday season is a must, a real stress buster. Monkey sew, monkey do!! The possibilities are endless. We are going to supply everything you need to create your very own monkey. The sewing machines, a pair of "original" red heeled men's work socks, stuffing, needle and thread, buttons, and of course Karen and I providing lots of encouragement for creativity. Did I mention the Sock-a-tinis, nibbles, and lots of laughter?

Here is how...you call up a few friends, you pen us in for December 5th from 5pm - 8pm, then send in your check in the amount of $50, made payable to Felted Heart and mail to: 405 Sinclair Ave., Atlanta, GA 30307. We have room for 12 people so don't put it off! Adults only, please. The workshop will be held at Felted Heart Studio, 658 Angier Ave. #C in the Old Fourth Ward.

Mary and I have been planning a sock monkey workshop for awhile. Well, ever since she started sewing up the cutest sock monkey T-shirts I have ever seen! We are planning and scheming and coming up with ideas for great drinks and snacks to serve while we make our sock monkeys. (Sockatinis are the first item on the list, a drink akin to the chocolate martini, but with a little sock monkey twist thrown in for fun.)

So of course, part of the planning is always to make your project before hand to find the possible pitfalls and iron out any kinks in the construction etc. To that end my son Eric and I got together with some friends this weekend and we finally sewed our socks (that we ordered 3 years ago!) into monkeys. It was so much fun!

Meet Lulu, Bob, Lola and Bubu. They each have their own personality, but love to get together and put on plays. (More about that later.)

These Kids Are So Creative

Both Mary and I grew up in an environment where sewing and crafting were everywhere. Mary's mom sewed dresses and clothes for her 7 children, and my Dad was/is an artist and art professor. My mom, aunt and grandmother always had something on the knitting needles or were sewing up some clothes or curtains for the house. Even my great grandmother was an aficionado in the fiber arts, she wove beautiful woolens that she used to sew clothes for her family and make the most gorgeous bed spreads and bed linens. So you could say, that love of fabric, wool and sewing is in our blood.

We realize that this is not the case for most kids growing up today. The trend has been away from sewing and "doing it yourself". That is why we love teaching the kids classes so much. We want to help this next generation connect with the fiber arts again. Not only because sewing is fun, but because the satisfaction kids get from sewing and making and doing it themselves is invaluable. And then there is the fact that these girls are so creative! They just need a little direction to help them let that creativity shine.

Advanced Beginner Sewing Starts October 12

Mary and I are so happy that our last class couldn't get enough and wants to continue on with more sewing! We'll be starting up again on Monday and the ladies will be making a dress or blouse. The main objective aside from actually making a dress or blouse (!) is to learn how to use a pattern. We'll continue on with more advanced sewing skills and break out the needle and thread to learn hand sewing techniques. Should be fun.......
